Thanks for the suggestion Casper. I have already installed and uninstalled (can't rememebr the exact order) the "meta" theme from the same folks that did the lcars theme and the NuvoPearl theme. I may have jumped to the wrong conclusion, however. I'm beginning to think it was a hardware (setting?) issue - maybe connected or maybe not. I had rebooted serveral times during troubleshooting, but had not completly powered it down and removed the battery. Upon power back up, all seems to be back to working correctly... I may have even been wrong about boot-up sounds, it was so distorted that it *might* have been the correct sound - not sure I ever rebooted while lcars was installed, so... whatever. It's working now. I apprecaite the support. Great communities like this add a lot to owning device like the N800...
