As long as nothing in the hosts file blocks you from getting to a website you need. The hosts file basically reroutes DNS names to IP addresses. So, if you had a line in your hosts file that looked like:

127.0.0.1 talk.maemo.org
This would tell your tablet to use the IP address 127.0.0.1 for talk.maemo.org, instead of querying your DNS server to find out what the IP address is. The way it blocks out advertisements is by redirecting any servers that host ads to 127.0.0.1, your tablet, which doesn't have any webserver, or ads.
