I never run with swap turned on (I have massive problems with overall stability when I do) and I still used to see that happen whenever there are 12 or more podcasts to download. For me, it used to ALWAYS happen at 12 or more. I haven't had that many podcasts to download in a long time now so I don't know if it's still the case.. but it seemed as if gpodder was STRAINING and operating some kind of blocking operation immediately after you tap 'Download' and just before the downloads happen (maybe it was processing something just before the actual data downloads).
