You won't need to type commands.

When you open the MiniSD slot door, the system will attempt to automatically unmount any card within. If you have an application using a file on the card, the system will fail to unmount the card, and a warning message will appear on the tablet's screen. Should you remove the card anyway, bad things could happen.

The system will automatically attempt to mount the card in the MiniSD slot when the card slot door is closed.

I am wondering if the pouch has a screen cover hard enough to protect the device from a moderate direct blow to the screen, like what a Palm device has.
The pouch is not hard. Should you want protection similar to the hard flip covers on Palm devices, you'll need to look at third party solutions. For suggestions in that area, you might try searching for old threads here, as cases have been discussed frequently. There's also the chance that someone may wander in here to provide an opinion.

I don't use a case, so I will bow out at this point.
