Have you tried "Hike"? I think it's in the standard repositories. You scan a paper map, calibrate using 3 or 4 points, and it can record tracks as well.
I made a calibrated map from the paper map of the Parc de la Gaspesie (section St-Octave, Mont Logan and Lac Thibault) I can send you if you want :-)
Since calibration is a bit of a pain on the tablet, I compiled the hike source on my linux box, which works well enough for that. Then it's just a matter of transferring the .cal file to the tablet.
But yes, I'd love to have vector topo on the N800. Maybe qlandkarte can be ported? Then the Ibycus canadian topo data could be used, which is straight from the Canadian gov. 1:50000 database.
OTOH, going hiking/canoeing might not be very healthy to a N8x0, so I stick to my (somewhat buggy) eTrex Venture Cx.
