Just start a new repository, make sure it's in SQlite format and named differently. Then just download the maps as you please or whenever. This enables you to still use the old repo (just switch back to it.. name the new one like Google Maps 2) while getting the new one. Eventually your new one will catch up to the old one and you can delete the old one.
