What makes Lithium Ion so nice is that the number of charge/discharge cycles is almost twice of Nickel Cadmium, and a third greater than Nickel Metal Hydride. The down side (besides not liking moisture) is that the Lithium plate in the battery has to build a skin of ions on it's surface. That's why it takes 3 to 5 cycles to reach it's capacity (typed at the Boston Museum of Science and I did not know this myself til an hour ago.)
