VNC over the Internet is fine. You can even use the Java client to run it in a (desktop) browser. I use VNC over the Internet (through an encrypted SSH tunnel) to remote control my home PCs (both Windows and Linux) all the time. The tablet does VNC just fine (and the encrypted SSH tunnel, too! Thanks, tsocks!) but the desktop's screen is usually a lot bigger and so I end up having to scroll around the screen a lot...
