I'm not sure we're talking about exactly the same thing. Maybe you could post a picture. I'm familiar with pixbuf compositing; here's a screen shot of my bookmark menu. Notice how the favicons are overlayed on the "new tab" icon. That's done programatically.



What I wasn't able to figure out was how microb changes the icon in the Task Switcher. Here's another screen shot.
