The problems you are describing may be related to water damage (bare with me for an explanation) and unfortunately there is not much you can do about...

The key here is "chilled" environment. The tablet is constructed rather tight. When it is brought in from a hotter and more humid outside air environment to one that is closer to freezing the moisture in the air inside the device will begin to condense as the device cools. This condensate could be considerable. When the device returns to the warmer environment, the condensed moisture evaporates leaving behind oxidants that corrode connectors and bridge or short circuits.
