Not true at all. The Nokia 5800 is Nokia's best-selling smartphone right now, it's selling on a similar scale to the iPhone and it has a plain old resistive touchscreen with single touch and no keypad.
You might like multitouch and it might be useful in some situations but it is not
mandatory
. If it was mandatory why are so many non-keyboard non-multitouch touchscreen phones selling so well?
