So I was hoping that when I leave town, I won't have to lug my laptop in order to access my office PC if I can do the same with the N800 and VNC. Are you saying that is not the intended use of VNC? Does GotomyPC not work with the browser built into the Nokia IT? Is it java-based?

VNC is used for that same sort of purpose but it is more for use in networks where you have control over a bit of the infrastructure between server and client (i.e. within a LAN or over a VPN) as it has no built-in encryption AFAIK and does not traverse NAT firewalls without some sort of help ... two very important things for free-range remote access to your desktop.
