In UK and Europe the N900 is almost free with Vodafone (it is 29). With no operator in USA, no way of it having mass appeal. $600 is still not a cheap price. Now, iPhone 3G is only $99 on AT&T, that's a difference... But for the unlocked segment N900 rocks!
