windows xp is pretty open as you can run it on basically everything from 486 upwards. i'm running nlited xp on my desktop, my laptops, my download server, my carpc and my robot - it's pretty stable.

what usually makes it cough are 3rd party hardware drivers - a tribute to its openness.

it doesn't as much explain the success of windows as rather the success of apple. in many of their commercials, they make fun of instability of windows machines.
