You can already do that with the n800/n810 sort of. With Google chat (granted it's terrible quality).
In The IM framework is Ovi, Skype, Google Talk, and Jabber. Most of these (if not all save skype) are built on the OMA Open IM standards. I assume that other will come, but not sure of the route. The framework makes it harder for people like NimBuzz to make a living my adding a a full client, as the client is already there - you just plug in the plumbing. And there is no money in plumbing. Maybe the AIM and YM guys will do it, but again without a client to show adverts, why would they bother? Maybe Open Source to the rescue, but some of these protocols have to be licen$ed. hard nut to crack.
