I wonder if renicing mmcqd as mentioned here http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...070#post338070 would help with the freezes or help general performance when booting from SD/MMC and/or swapping to it.

compcache/ramzez looks interesting but I'd guess (without any testing) it may actually make things worse due to more CPU usage and less real RAM left to be available for applications. benchmarks on the site are for faster machines with more RAM, the lowest configuration I found is here http://code.google.com/p/compcache/w...ce/under500MHz and it is still twice the memory and faster CPU and the results are not so great

I guess I simply need to try it before judging :-)
Good points made , I haven't tried the mmcqd renicing before, gotta try that to improve the performance.

Compcache really does eat more CPU cycles but I am not sure how much more or less does it eat on the contrary to the internal/external swap. I tried to compile systemtap, with no avail yet, that would give some data . On the slower machine issue, I have thought that although ARM processors have less MHz than some Pentium machines, the actual instruction set efficiency should make the difference, I guess.
