Well, I don't have one so I can't give you a definitive answer, but I imagine it goes something like this (using the proximity sensor):

1. N900 is face up
2. N900 rings
3. Owner checks N900, or decides to ignore call, puts N900 face down
4. Proximity sensor detects that it's face down and the N900 stops ringing

OR

1. N900 is face down
2. N900 rings
3. Owner checks N900, or decides to ignore call, puts N900 face down
OR
3. Owner rolls the N900 across the desk
4. Proximity sensor detects that it's face down and the N900 stops ringing


That's my guess.
