It can handle normal (non-SDHC) cards up to 4GB. Anything larger than that must be SDHC. I wouldn't be too worried about messing up the device flashing a new kernel, but then I'm familiar with Linux and use the command-line flasher on a Linux (Ubuntu) system and can re-flash the old one easily. Theoretically that's your biggest risk-- having to reflash your device.
