On the USB host mode, depending on how the gates are set up, it could be possible if power through the USB's circuit is disabled as the host device.

I wonder if the design is standard? Some power bridges for these type of USB designs are two way (so you can power the source device).

I doubt the MB on this device was designed for two way- even when plugged in. That would mean a more robust capacitor and resistor bridge (bigger MB to support this).
