And while last-minute hardware changes/corrections are abhored in production, they often become necessary evils. As a former product designer and QA I've dealt with enough to turn hair grey. Some were even with Nokia.
On the USB host mode, depending on how the gates are set up, it could be possible if power through the USB's circuit is disabled as the host device.

I wonder if the design is standard? Some power bridges for these type of USB designs are two way (so you can power the source device).

I doubt the MB on this device was designed for two way- even when plugged in. That would mean a more robust capacitor and resistor bridge (bigger MB to support this).
