Commercial developers are often not particularly enlightened, but they should WANT their apps pirated. The point is, it should be very inconvenient for users to pirate things. The overwhelming number of users will NOT pirate, because to them it's scary and too much trouble -- when a new version comes along, you have to wait till your friendly pirate makes it available for you.

It is in the interest of commercial developers to make their software difficult but not impossible to pirate, and make software that pirates will like. Pirates don't care what things cost, they just use the best they can get their hands on. Pirate preference influences users. Pirates can effectively be part of the sales organization of commercial developers. (This has been my point of view for many years, haven't dusted it off and said it for awhile.)
