Any particular reason for the DVI-I instead of HDMI, I'm completely ignorant with respect to the comparative pros/cons of each.
HDMI and DVI-D are digital only. In the long run, that's the goal, but in the near term, there's still analog things to deal with (export to non-digital projectors, VGA monitors, etc.). DVI-I is able to use adaptors that work with analog TV's, analog projectors, VGA monitors, DVI monitors, HDMI monitors, digital TVs, and digital projectors. DVI-D and HDMI can only (cheaply) work with DVI monitors, HDMI monitors, digital projectors and digital TVs.

Basically, DVI-I provides the greatest flexibility.
