when you save the route, use the mmc card and save it to the root of that filesystem. call it route with no extension. use vi or some text editor to view the XML. most of the "strings" are the turn by turn directions.

you may want to check out the strings function (ie strings /mnt/mmc1/route) too. a little less messy.

ortherwise, you could also take up XSLT, and digest the XML file natively...
