The undercurrent feeling that Nokia did not build enough N900s for the demand seems strange to me. I remember talking to Nokia in 2003 about minimum number of units for a "run" of a model. They were talking minimum of 1 million or it's not worth their time. Of course, the N770/800/810 had to have been quite small in number. For the amount of marketing they have been producing for this model, I would think they would have built plenty to satisfy the demand.
