The iPhone 3GS's oleophobic screen though is rumored to come of prematurely and scratch easy...

and the oleophobic coating doesn't help against scratches and I don't know how smart it is to put a screen protector on top of the coating.
I have had the HTC Touch HD which have a resistive touch screen as well and I have never had any problems with scratches on the screen.
But I guess under the right (wrong more likeley) circumstances a scratch could occur on day one but it could also do so with even the best screen protectors, capasitive screens etc.
