[Maybe this should be in off-topic]
This is a general question, but I am asking it here as it may have some relevance to those starting in Maemo development. Also, I respect the advice of Maemo developers.
I am working on a simple software project for an embedded ARM processor running Debian. The project is now what might be called a "package", with a few scripts (perl and shell), some configuration files, and which uses various log and data directories when it is running. The software is edited on my desktop, then moved to the embedded computers for installation and testing.
Up until now I have been doing it all from a user standpoint and the software is run using the user crontab. The directories are all in the user account and I do updates using tar.gz files. The tar.gz files are also my version control.
I want to move this away from the user and make it part of the system that any user can interract with.
My question is how can I move to a more proper version control and updating system for this package? What tools are there that I can use without too much effort?
Please note that I am not a programmer or system pro and don't have the time nor the inclination to learn something that is too involved or too complex. (I struggle with makefiles.)
