How about a universal widget that supports all of the major social networks? Let it show a profile photo, status updates, inbox, friend requests, comments, friend list, media streams, and photos. We could start with Facebook and MySpace, the largest social networks in the world, and add Orkut and 51.com and others over time. (And please don't say Orkut and 51 are irrelevant, too. Do the research and check the numbers first.)
