Would the difference in models affect my experience of 3G/HSDPA networks in Europe if I used a US model?

Also, is Nokia differentiating firmwares based on product codes like with Symbian, or is every model able to automatically receive firmware updates?
I would love to know the answer to this as I am presently considering flying over to the US for the black Friday sales and if I can also pick up an N900 that I can use in the UK it will help make my decision much easier.
