I think you have to create the file. From xterm, under the default user, your homedir (not root), create the file with vi and add global header; it looks like this:

$ vi .gnokiirc

[global]
port = xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
model = AT
initlength = default
connection = bluetooth
use_locking = yes
serial_baudrate = 19200
rfcomm_channel = 1
smsc_timeout = 10
