When traveling out of state, there have been "dead zones" even for my Verizon carrier. When that happens, I find a WiFi access point (usually my motel for the night) and am able to call any landline or cell phone number. Of course, I will get charged a few cents per minute, but I am at least able to stay in touch with family and friends. It is totally free if I call another computer.
