I amused to using Nokia messaging as I said re my other phones, but unfortunately (and it would seem now unwisely) deleted my Nokia messaging account before I received my new N900.

Have you try entering in the settings manually? It does give the option for manual input if it failed to connect by getting the settings automatically (it can't find the right settings)
Just put in what Tiscali gives you.

I had to do this for some of my email accounts.
