If your server uses trusted certificate than nothing shall be done on a client (N900) side.

if so what certificate is it and if it is not currently on there, where can i download it from?

i'm getting the following error

"exchange account disabled. access refused"

this is at first synchronisation.
It is better to ask your Exchange server administrator for help. Just explain your IT guys that Nokia N900 does not accept the certificates which are not trusted. They shall deliver the certificates to you. And you can install them using maemo file manager - simply open certificate from it. Keep in mind, "Certificate Authority" field shall not be empty as otherwise it will not be allowed to install this certificate.
