Maybe one of the file managers Thunar or PCManFM may be good to be ported.. Respectively file managers of XFCE and LXDE, they look to have a clean interface (not too busy with too many icons and parts), and are light.
They're both GTK anyway, maybe something in QT is better for future compatibility?
Just as a suggestion anyway, I cannot help, and my knowledge is very limited.
