That thread is from last year, and it's about the old devices (OS2008/Maemo 4), not the N900 and Maemo 5. None of the built-in apps on the N900 require a stylus, but a few third-party apps are somewhat less than finger friendly.

Personally, while I'm glad it's not needed for most things, I really like having a stylus. It's nice to be able to actually draw instead of just finger-paint, and use apps with tons of buttons (e.g. graphing calculator emulators, desktop Linux apps, etc.)
