Until the arrival of gmail, I would agree. With gmail, though, I have everything in the inbox. Instead of sorting to different specific folders you just tag mails with one or more labels, which is better than sorting to distinct boxes. The idea is to search with a select set of criteria, of which labels are one. Currently I have nearly 14000 _threads_ in my inbox, each of which consists of one or up to very many individual mails. I haven't tried to access it with an imap client though so I'm not certain how it's done there, maybe labels will be associated with imap folders.

If you don't, this might cause undue stress if you're maxing out your n900 with music, browsing and what not. You could still experience problems and frustration resulting from slowdown and/or scarce resources such as memory. Clean it up and be happier.
I'm guessing that some of the current problems are impossible to avoid until the mail client is fixed so that it can receive headers only. Combine that with e.g. only downloading unread mailheaders, or the latest 50 or 100 or something, and you're all set.
