The point is that there's no such thing as "plain, vanilla avi". It's a container format(like wmv, mkv etc.). The file is a package inside of which there are video and audio files which can be encoded in _a lot_ of different ways. The N900 can unpack the package, but if there's no support for decoding the actual files inside it then it won't play. So the answer is that it plays some avi files and doesn't play others. Luckily support for more codecs can be installed unlike on many other devices.
