You people did answer the question if it plays *.avi's out of the box and it seems as if the OP is grossly incorrect. Congrats. It took multiple pages to confirm/deny something that simple.

Regardless, it seems as if the ability to play certain *.avi or *.wmv's - WMV9 DRM and above are definitely out. That kind of detailed information would help in instances as such.
I thought you wanted to steer away from semantics? If by *.avi you actually mean all files that have the extension .avi and by playing you mean that you can actually see and hear video and audio then it's not that straightforward.

Edit: I'm not sure whether you know more than I do, and there are multiple versions of the avi container format or you simply don't understand what avi file is?
