I've had the n900 a day or so now and wanted to share my first impressions of it. Overall though I'm loving the device, yes it does feel a little unfinished in places, particularly the UI navigation, but I expected that and came into buying it with my eyes open.
Ok, what's cool about the n900:
The standard stuff: all the stuff people have been raving about in this thread such as the browser, the multitasking, the screen, the video codec support (played back a couple of ripped DVDs in .avi format and they played flawlessly)
Skype integration: this is freakin awesome, being able to switch seamlessly between SMS/Skype chat and between cellphone calls and voip calls is great, and it's all possible from within a person's contact page. And the quality of skype calls is very high, people couldn't really tell if the call was using data rather than voice. mind blowing stuff.
The keyboard: I've read some complaints about this in reviews, but I actually find it pretty easy to type on it. yes, the keys are pretty small and this does result in the odd misspress, but once you get used to them you can pick up some speed, the tactile feedback is great. I actually prefer this to the keyboard on my Nokia e90, which to be honest I always thought was a little too big. Hell, I'm posting this on the n900, so it can't be that bad
The app store: oh yeah, that's right, the one thing most 'professional' reviewers are soundind dire warnings about is a thing I love. maybe it's coming from a symbian phone where getting/finding apps was an expensive and tortuous business, having them free and on the phone is great, and some of them are extremely useful, particularly the applet for taking screenshots and Mastory for Wordpress, Blogger uploads.
And so much other stuff I don't have time to go into: the sharing integration on the camera, multiple desktops, contact fields.
Stuff I'm not so keen on:
Just a few things really. The music player is pretty basic, it doesn't handle playlists or album art very well. the UI navigation is still a bit confusing, intuitively I don't know how to get from one place in the UI to another and will often go somewhere I don't want to go first before getting to where I want to be. If that makes any sense at all!
But these are minor niggles, overall it's an awesome device and for those of you still waiting for it - yes I know it's a cliche - but it really is worth the wait.
