Maemo is just not ready for the tough job that there is to do. Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought the starting point here was Linux. Nokia problem is in converting Linux to a next dimension thought it was build up by a very large group of very dedicated persons to start with (and having less dedication to documentation).

There seems to be a strong faith that Nokia can do some miracles by themselves in a much shorter time than Linux was created. The final conclusion is that most of the N900 applications and desktop are slow & lacking too many useful features, SW lacks stability and design is actually bulky. If you are keen to wait for SW updates that might come within 2- 12 months or so - go ahead. I know that being a test user can also be interesting.
While software could cause these problems i very much doubt it is.
If it was just a software issue then everybody would be complaining about slow responsivness and constant rebooting.
However this is not the case, as has already been pointed out the majority of people are not experiencing these problems.

At the very least contact support and get a new fully functioning device before drawing your conclusion.

Yes of course the software is not polished yet, and yes it will have bugs, all software has bugs. there is no such thing as 100% bug free software. Software is made by people and people make mistakes.
Programmers mistake = bug in software.
But... the software will get better and better as time goes on.

Though as i said im certain your issue must be hardware related, get a new device and see how that one handles. you may be pleasently surprised
