This is basically what application manager does behind the scenes. Unlike with application manager, however, you should receive a message that tells you what's actually failing. You could post that message here, or it may even be helpful enough for you to figure out how to get gaim installed.

my bad there was maemo-gaim-data installed :-)
so much maemo* programs...
so removing maemo-gaim-data it installed even from app.manager !
