Whether necessary (because stuff is pushed) or unnecessary (nothing is pushed) a TCP connection is kept alive the whole time.

I can imagine this not allowing the device to go in deeper power saving modes.

I'd only put push mail on if it is necessary to have real-time e-mail. Else, I found a setting of check every 5 minutes instant enough to be usable.
