anyone have a solution?
I don't have a solution I'm afraid, but it sounds like a good reason to get a 5-row keyboard like the Sierra, which has numeric keys that can be used with Fn. I haven't installed gnumeric, so I can't say whether F2 works as Magi suggests.

However, I can use F6 to toggle full-screen on and off, F7 to zoom in, F8 to zoom out, F4 for an application's main menu and F3 for the application launcher menu. F9 brings up the window switcher and F12 functions as the power/off button.

There are a few applications (xterm and Notes are the ones that come to mind) where the Fn key brings up a pop-up menu. In xterm, the pop-up menu prevents the function key from being invoked, which is a minor nuisance.
