If everyone gave up on the first gen iphone with os 1.0, there would be no massive iphone market now with all those apps.

There wasn't "an app for that" for a whole year, don't forget...

I've found the device to be usable with obvious limitations, but not unreasonable ones. Flash is slow on the n900, but *still* not even available on the iPhone.

I dunno... it's a first release of a very complex OS that clearly has the ability to grow into something amazing. You buy in now for a couple reasons - but "mature out of the box experience" probably isn't one of them.
