Well, it's a (more or less) known fact that 3G sucks battery like crazy, even more so in areas with poor network coverage...
In fact, probably all phones which support 3G will have battery issues solved when switching back to EDGE...

So I'm not too surprised of your observation...but I agree that it may defeat the whole idea of always on-line (with a good network bandwidth).
