Defintely need a desktop widget to switch, but to be honest, why shouldn't these phones be optimised for 3G? My N97 was pretty good. I think its worse when you're in a weak 3G signal area like mine. The phone will boost its power to search for a 3G signal and then revert to 2G. It will constantly be checking for a 3G signal even when on 2G unless the GSM only is selected from options.
