sudo gainroot
mkdir /PALM/launcher
mkdir /PALM/programs

ls /

you should see your directories made.

Or, a cheater's way, install emelfm2, it is a GUI file manager, an explorer style, to get around N900 without knowing 'too much' about Linux . I cannot do anything without emelfm2. Installation is kind of tricky as it has not 'formally' made it to N900, instructions here thread #14
