It depends where you purchased it. Many places they have been out of stock for the last couple of weeks and more, and new ones will not come until mid.end January.
I know many similar situations. Of cource it is hardware, but it may have nothing to do with sloppy QA or sloppy specs. It may simply be natural spread in actual HW specs that is not accounted for in the (immature) drivers. The work around works excellent, no problems at all except your battery will last shorter when the N900 is lying on the table doing nothing.
So, for many. the least of two evils is to do the work around, at least untill we are more certain if this can be fixed in software (or not), and more sets are produced.
