Taking the back off really does solve the problem.

But, the problems with taking the back off as a long-term workaround:
  • The microSD card becomes unavailable, and that's where I save my pics by default.
  • The camera app shuts down and must be started manually (the lens cover detection doesn't work)
  • The "guts" of the device are exposed, and that's bothersome.
