Nothing was wrong at all. I did no tinkering. I didn't install gainroot. I just wanted to reset everything to factory defaults.

Sorry for being rude. That was uncalled for. I just can't count the number of times I've seen the "you shouldn't have done it in the first place" response as people's actual answer to the problem. It drives me nuts.
