But there is a way to get around it though you just need to do the key combination self reflashing to out of the box experience.

The 3 buttons rules will erase the lock code completely. And the 4 buttons on N97. But not so sure about the N900 because I have not tried flashing it.
A 3 key format does not erase the lock code on s60, the lock code remains the same, flashing s60 devices also does not change the lock code.
