A quick benchmark of enfuse on the my desktop (Quad core i7; 6 GB RAM):

11 source pictures: 14.2 seconds. Top displays about 600 MB memory usage
2 source pictures: 2.8 seconds. Top displays about 180 MB memory usage.

I don't have easy debian installed atm.
